Kyoto Japan

We continue our series on the best undiscovered places in Japan, and this week is Kyoto. The city attracts millions of visitors from Japan and overseas every year - but there is much more to this fascinating country than the historic sites most visitors to Kyoto prefecture see. There are many off-road attractions in the city, such as the Shibuya Shrine and the Imperial Palace. While the well-preserved monuments of the ancient city and its ancient temples are Kyoto's biggest attraction, there are many more explored and fascinating areas throughout the prefecture, many of which are off the beaten track.

You can travel to any of these destinations by Shinkansen, but you can also take a bus from Kyoto Station to the temples or a train from the city centre to Shibuya Station or the Imperial Palace.

If you have a Japan Rail Pass and are interested in a trip from Kyoto during your stay in Kansai, I recommend you to consult Japan Tours for Kyoto and Tokyo. There are a number of other popular city centre tourist destinations, such as the Temple of the Golden Temple and Kyoto Imperial House, that are also visited, but you really should reserve them for a longer stay or a second visit.
