About Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto, Japan is an intriguing kaleidoscope of timeless traditions and trendy technology. Once the capital of Japan for over 1000 years, Kyoto is steeped in history. The Chaji tea ceremony, Ikebana floral arranging and Geisha training originated in Kyoto. Over 1,700 temples, 300 shrines, magnificent palaces, shopping meccas, cultural performances and savory cuisine offer many choices. With limited travel time, it pays to plan ahead and make the most of time in Kyoto.

Visitors seeking an authentic Japanese experience enjoy Kyoto hospitality at a Ryokan, a traditional inn with tatami rooms, futons for beds and kaiseki feasts. After a good rest, begin explorations at Kinkakuji, the famous “Golden Pavilion,” considered by many the finest temple in Japan. Meander the shady path to the tea house and Fudodo shrine. Linger at nearby Ryoanji and meditate about life enchanting rock garden. Marvel at the amazing five story pagoda of Ninnanji. Nijo Castle overflows with treasures, grand gardens and peaceful ponds. Over the centuries, ten palaces have stood on the ground where the Kyoto Imperial Palace Temple stands today. The palace, rebuilt in 1855 following a fire. was the home of Japan’s imperial family until the capital was moved to Tokyo in 1868. Tours must be booked in advance online or with passport in hand at the Kyoto Imperial Park. The Kiyomiza-dera Temple requires physical stamina. The path is steep and there are many steps. The three-story pagoda is inspiring and views of the Kyoto skyline are worth the climb.

Kyoto’s Gion district is like stepping into the movie, Memoirs of a Geisha. Elegant geishas clad in elaborate kimonos and full make-up glide through the streets. Shop for a beautiful kimono or mementos at the Kyoto Craft Center. Head south for panoramic views from Kiyomizudera, the temple for lovers. Return for an evening performance at Gion Corner. A visit to Kyoto inevitably ends with many sites still unseen, many meals yet to be savored and more exciting experiences waiting. When it is time to say Sayonara, magical memories of Kyoto linger in your heart until you return.
